About the Service

The Indian Trade Service (ITS) is a specialized Group ‘A’ Central Civil Service that plays a crucial role in shaping and implementing India’s foreign trade and commercial policy. ITS officers work primarily in the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, and represent India’s trade interests both domestically and internationally. They also serve in organizations like:

  • Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT)
  • Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence & Statistics (DGCIS)
  • Indian Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO)
  • Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC)
  • Commodity Boards and Export Promotion Councils

Recruitment and Entry

Recruitment to the Indian Trade Service is through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted annually by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Candidates who qualify the Prelims, Mains, and Personality Test stages and opt for the Commerce or Economic Administration stream are allotted the ITS based on their rank and preference.

Training of ITS Officers

Training for ITS officers is designed to combine academic learning with hands-on exposure to trade mechanisms.

1. Foundation Course

Conducted at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie, along with other Group A services. Covers general public administration, governance, and ethics.

2. Professional Training

Conducted primarily at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi.

  • Global Supply Chains and Logistics
  • Trade Finance and Exchange Management
  • Bilateral and Multilateral Trade Negotiations

Study visits to DGFT field offices, ports, SEZs, Customs Houses, and foreign trade missions are part of the curriculum.

Cadre Management and Postings

ITS officers are centrally managed by the Department of Commerce.

Initial postings are usually in DGFT offices across major cities (e.g., Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru).

Officers may later move to:

  • Commerce Ministry (Policy divisions, WTO, Trade Policy Division)
  • International assignments (Embassies, Permanent Missions, International Bodies)
  • Public Sector Enterprises or Autonomous Bodies related to trade.
