About the Service
The Indian Postal Service (IPoS) is one of the Group ‘A’ Central Civil Services of the Government of India. It forms an integral part of the country’s communication infrastructure and plays a key role in managing postal operations, logistics, and financial services under the Department of Posts (DoP).
The modern Indian Postal System began in 1854 under British rule. After independence, the Indian Postal Service (IPoS) was formally constituted in 1948 to provide efficient postal, courier, and allied services to every corner of the nation.

Field and Regional Level Posts
- Assistant Superintendent / Assistant Director: Entry-level post responsible for managing postal divisions or operational units.
- Senior Superintendent / Senior Postmaster: Supervises multiple postal divisions and ensures efficient service delivery.
- Director (Postal Services): Heads postal operations for an entire region within a circle.
- Postmaster General (PMG): Responsible for administration and development of postal services in a large region.
- Chief Postmaster General (CPMG): Heads the postal circle (equivalent to a state-level administrative unit).
Central Secretariat Level Posts
- Deputy Director General (DDG): Supervises specific policy areas such as logistics, finance, or human resources.
- Member (Postal Services Board): Senior policy-making position in the Department of Posts.
- Director General (DG) & Secretary (Posts): The apex post in the IPoS, responsible for national-level policy, coordination, and modernization of postal services.
Training Structure
- Foundation Course: Conducted at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie — shared with other Civil Services probationers. Focuses on general governance, economics, ethics, and administration.
- Professional Training: Conducted at Rafi Ahmed Kidwai National Postal Academy (RAKNPA), Ghaziabad. Includes postal operations, logistics management, financial services, HR, accounting, and technology systems.
- Field Training: Hands-on experience at various postal and regional offices to understand real-world challenges of the postal system.
Cadre and Postings
IPoS officers are part of an All India Cadre under the Department of Posts. They are posted at different levels of the postal network — from divisional offices to the Directorate in New Delhi. Officers may serve on deputation to other ministries, PSUs, or international organizations like the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The Cadre Policy emphasizes nationwide exposure and periodic transfers between administrative, financial, and technical roles.
