About the Service

The Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service (DANIPS) is a Group ‘B’ Central Civil Service under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Officers of this service are responsible for maintaining law and order, crime prevention, investigation, and internal security administration across the National Capital Territory of Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Daman & Diu, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

The DANIPS serves as a feeder cadre for the Indian Police Service (IPS), providing capable officers for promotion to the IPS after a few years of meritorious service.

Recruitment and Entry

Recruitment to DANIPS is through the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted annually by the UPSC. Candidates who qualify the Preliminary, Mains, and Interview stages of the examination are allotted DANIPS based on their rank, preference, and vacancy availability.

There are two main modes of recruitment:

  • Direct Recruitment – Through UPSC Civil Services Examination.
  • Promotion Quota – From the ranks of Delhi Police Inspectors who meet service and performance criteria.

Training of DANIPS Officers

Training for DANIPS officers is designed to develop strong leadership, discipline, and operational efficiency.

Training Stages:

  • Basic Training – Conducted at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad. Officers receive foundational training in law, investigation, forensics, and police procedures.
  • Practical Training – Carried out in the Delhi Police Training College, Jharoda Kalan, focusing on policing in urban and metropolitan environments.
  • Field Training – Officers are attached to police stations and field units for real-time exposure to law enforcement duties.

Career Progression and Hierarchy

DANIPS officers serve across multiple administrative and law enforcement levels. They may later be promoted to the Indian Police Service (IPS) based on seniority and performance.

Promotion to IPS:

Eligible DANIPS officers, after a stipulated number of years of service (usually 8–10 years), may be inducted into the IPS (AGMUT Cadre) based on seniority, performance appraisal, and vacancy availability.
